On Friday October 30th, 2009 was the opening for Evan Summer’s Prints Images and Photography. Walking into the gallery and slowly walking around I was impressed with a lot of pieces, while some I was a bit confused about but knowing that his work was about line and man made buildings really gave a better understand of the works.
The piece called End House which was a collage of paper and board on panel with graphite, pastel, powdered pgment and acrylic was extremely interesting to me. The use of the materials and how he allows it have that 3D effect which brought me (the viewer) into the piece almost as if I was part of the scene and I could walk onto the bored walk and walk to the house at the end. I found it extremely interesting and intreging that leaving the lines in the house and only the house besides the deck. It definitely gave it a different effect and was almost as if it wasn’t welcoming like the rest of the piece was.
I had two favorite pieces, one wast a collagraph named A Stillness In The Air. I really admired the use of grays, blacks and white and the use of line throughout the piece. Pieces of the room reminded me of an old downtown club or bar but it’s been abandon and empty for so long that’s all that’s left. When I look at the piece I can feel the stillness throughout but not as if it makes me lonely, more alone the lines of capturing a moment in history and bringing me into that moment and that is what really brings me into this piece. My second favorite Piece is another Collagraph called Inerior X. Similar to the last room but instead it brings me to a moment of quietness, and just getting away and trying to find ones center. I really like the dirty-ness of the room and how it almost feels it’s rotting away.
I really did enjoy the walk through and hearing him speak about the pieces and learning a little bit of the process that he goes through. I enjoyed the opening and getting to know the artist it gave me a better understanding about the work, and I appreciated it a lot more.
