I think that the Evan Summer’s exhibition was fairly impressive. My least favorite part of the show was his prints with the geometric forms & lines. Visually, I did not find them that appealing and I thought there were too many of them for just one show. However, having taken printmaking this semester, I am absolutely blown away by the craftsmanship and skill he demonstrated in those pieces. The line quality is amazing and it is mind boggling how he was able to draw such tiny, close together lines. I was very impressed with his ability to use those lines to create such a wide range of light value. My absolute favorite work of the show was his ‘Interior X’ collograph print. I liked this one the most because it was the only piece to me that really looked as though it had a deeper meaning behind it. Looking at the print you can almost create a narrative about who lives in that run down room. It was awesome to then see the collograph plate he used for the print in his workshop earlier this week. Another part of the show that I enjoyed a lot was the collages. I am starting to experiment with collages myself so I was really drawn to those. I also think that his use of color in the collages, and really all of his work that incorporated color was spot on. The bug prints and drawings were actually a really nice break from his other pieces, which were mostly landscapes and geometric forms. Again, his skill and devotion to his work was evident as the bugs were so incredibly detailed…almost to the point of appearing photogenic. I think I enjoyed this exhibit a ton more than the last one because you could really tell that the artist slaved over every piece. He is really devoted to art and is passionate about his craft. I can’t even begin to imagine the hours this man has spent etching in his life. Although most of his work was straight forward and didn’t appear to have much of a deeper meaning, it was really nice to hear him talk about his work and I am glad I went to the opening.
