The opening of Even Summers works of art was great. I felt that Chuck Heasley was not really ready for the job of speaking on the artist’s behalf though which was humorous. Evan Summers is a very jovial guy. I liked that he was very down to earth and that he had a sense that we were all people. Sometimes it seems that artists talk down to everyone at their show but he made jokes, even ones at his own expense.
To be honest I am not a fan of bugs in any way, but when I looked at the works the bugs were actually fascinating. I am in Chuck’s print making class right now and we have just covered making etching on copper plates. That being said, I really appreciated his work. It is difficult working with that material especially to create specific values in the works. I cannot believe that he can really make such picturesque prints of insects like that. He is really talented.
One this that has always been pleasing for me is a deep sense of dimension and these works really seemed to go back forever. His use of aquatint and a ruler to score the plate and also using dry point and soft ground really helped to make the dimensions really stand out. I think that his geometric forms create a sort of fantasy world. All the angles tend to create architectural forms. Sometimes I felt that the work was unfinished because there would be a lot of etching and then a scheme placed in the print where an object would go.
The collagraphs were also interesting. I had no idea what they were and he demonstrated how to do it in the workshop. I am really interested in this technique and I hope to explore it in my own work. A collagraph is a type of plate that uses collage techniques to create an image. I want to use different types of fabrics to create a plate of my own. I really enjoyed this show and I hope that there will be more shows that are enjoyable.
